RECRUITING
Home Headquarters 9th/12th Royal Lancers
is concerned with Officers' Careers. If you are interested in
serving as a soldier you should visit the
Army Website.

Have you thought of a career once you have left university?
Does life as an officer in the British Army appeal to you?
Are you reasonably fit and are you prepared to serve in an organisation which has a 300 year history but at the same time modern equipment, good career prospects, involves work in far flung places and has an up to date management structure?
If you can say YES to all these questions then we would like to hear from you.
THE REGIMENT
The 9th/12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales's) is an Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment in the British Army. The present Regiment was formed in 1960 from both the 9th Queens Royal Lancers and the 12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales's). Both Regiments trace their history back to the 1715 when they were raised as Cavalry Regiments to put down the Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland. Since then both regiments have been involved in most British military campaigns until their
amalgamation.
Since then 9/12L as the Regiment is known in its abbreviated form have been deployed in Aden, The Gulf, Cyprus, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo and individuals have served in the Falklands War, Beirut, The Gulf War and many other theaters.
Today the Regiment is in the Armoured Reconnaissance role and it is stationed in Northern Germany as part of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC) and committed to NATO. 9/12L is
equipped with Scorpion and Scimitar Armoured Reconnaissance Vehicles.
SELECTION
The Army will only take the best. The way we select our officers is rather different to the way other organisations do it. It may take some time but this way we ensure that only those who have the leadership qualities we need end up commanding our most valuable asset namely our soldiers.
This is how it is done:
Once you have registered your interest with us we invite you to go to the Regular Commissions Board (RCB) in
Westbury. for a briefing. Don't be mislead because this is part of the selection process. You will be given a series of tests and you will be shown what is expected of you when you appear before the board proper. You will be expected to take part in all the exercises.
Once the board has confirmed that your application can go ahead you will be asked to see the Colonel of the Regiment for interview and you will be asked to visit the Regiment. This visit is very important in two ways. First, it will give the Commanding Officer a chance to see whether you are someone who is suited to serve in an Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment; but more importantly you will have the opportunity to see for yourself whether you want to join 9/12L.
You will then be asked to attend RCB. This is a 4 day event where you will be given various exercises, both physical and written, to see whether you are suitable for officer training. You are not expected to prepare yourself for these tests as they are designed to show your natural abilities rather than
what you have learned. Nevertheless, you should be aware of the world around you which you can do by
reading some of the more serious newspapers and magazines. You are also expected to be reasonably physically fit. You will also have to undergo a medical examination. Once you have received a recommendation for officer training you will be called forward to attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS).
YOU AS AN OFFICER
A career as a commissioned officer in 9/12L is very rewarding and exciting. We are looking for young men with flair and ability, who are capable of leading their soldiers they are entrusted to command. Independent thinking, physical stamina, and professionalism are the basic requirements for service with the 9/12L. Military operations and exercises are often conducted in remote parts of the world where self-sufficiency and flexibility are demanded. You will probably be given more independence within the military sense than in many comparable Arms or Services in the British Army. You will be placed in charge of some highly trained and welll motivated soldiers. Before you are let loose on our soldiers we will put you through some extensive and rewarding training first at RMAS and later at the Armour Centre at Bovington.
