A proforma is included for return with your membership fee and subscriptions to the Regimental Journal, the Journal 200 Club and the OCA 150+ Club.  On this same proforma members are requested to tick where indicated if they hope to attend and would like to receive details later of the following events:  Derbyshire Yeomanry Dinner, Canterbury Service, Field of Remembrance Ceremony and Luncheon, and the OCA Christmas Luncheon.  Please do not forget to do this.  REMEMBER "NO TICK - NO CIRCULAR LETTER".

INTERNET

Home Headquarters now has a web-site and an e-mail address.  It will be a tremendous help to all of us if you could let this office have your e-mail address if you have one yourself.  You can, of course do this through the Internet.  Details are:

Website                                   www.delhispearman.org.uk

Regimental Secretary                chappell@delhispearman.org.uk

Assistant Regimental Secretary  hardy@delhispearman.org.uk

We will still send you your newsletter through the post but we would send you notification of any occurrences such as death notices, changes to our programme of events etc electronically.  Click on ‘NEWS’ on the Home Page of our Web-Site. Here we will publish any occurrences of interest to members of the Regiment.

Attached is a questionnaire (page 17 & 18) which we have used before, and we would ask those who have not previously replied to complete.  When completed, please return the questionnaire to Home Headquarters.

The reasons are very simple, namely to maintain and update our records, but also with the advent of the new computer system to create an accurate database that can give accurate lists for 9L, 12L, 9/12L and 27L of all ranks together with as many email addresses as possible.

One of our regular and sad duties is to notify the relevant people of deaths and other events.  If we could create an accurate and rapid (near automatic) system, it would save the Association a great deal of time and money.Providing that the programme is correctly set up, those that cannot be contacted electronically will receive a letter.

HOME HEADQUARTERS RECORDS

If you are moving house, please let us know, so that we can keep our records up to date.

ACCEPTANCES AND WEARING OF FOREIGN AWARDS

You are reminded that the acceptance and wearing of foreign awards is subject to very strict rules.  These have recently been revised in the light of the British Armed Forces’ increasing involvement in operation with allies.  In all circumstances the Sovereign’s permission is required before a UK citizen or a member of the Armed Forces may accept or wear an order, decoration or medal offered by a foreign government.  Certain awards, such as some UN Medals, have already been sanctioned by HM The Queen and may be worn by those entitled to wear them at all times.  If you are in any doubt whether you are allowed to accept or wear a foreign award you should seek guidance from: Defence Secretary,    Ministry of Defence, Metropole Building Northumberland Avenue, LONDON WC2N 5BL

WELFARE

9th/12th ROYAL LANCERS (Prince of Wales’s) CHARITABLE ASSOCIATION

The Members of the Old Comrades Association are the eyes and ears of Home Headquarters.  We rely on all of you to keep us informed about any Old Comrade or his widow or other dependants who are in need of help from the Regimental Charitable Association.  Last year the Charitable Association was able to help in 50 cases when we distributed some £24,030 but none of this would have been possible without the help of the wonderful SSAFA caseworkers who investigate all cases of hardship that we pass on to them. Their recommendations are invaluable in assessing the amount of help that should be given, and once that has been agreed by the Trustees SSAFA again make sure that the money granted is applied directly to the problem.

Please always remember that the Charitable Association was set up specifically to help Old Comrades who through no fault of their own require assistance.

VETERANS AGENCY

The Veterans Agency is the focal point within the Ministry of Defence for providing information and advice on issues concern to veterans and their families via the Veterans Agency free help line service – 0800 169 2277 or email: veterans.help@spva.gsi.gov.uk

Veterans Initiative

The Government’s Veterans Initiative was launched in clear recognition of the special status of those who have served in the UK Armed Forces and the unique contribution they have made to the country.  It works towards a better co-ordination and communications – not only with the veterans community, but also across Government and with charities and the voluntary sector – to improve the level of services and support available for veterans and their families.

Who is a Veteran?

The term ‘veteran’ is used to mean all those who have served in the UK Armed Forces including their widow(er)s and dependants.

What assistance is available?

Veterans and their families can get help on many different issues for example health, financial, employment and accommodation.  The Veterans Agency Free Helpline can also help with enquiries about service records, medals and military graves – these are just a few examples of the type of advice available.  A wide range of information of interest to veterans is also available on the Veterans Agency website www.veterans-uk.info including useful links to other organisations and Government Departments.

The War Pensioners’ Welfare Service

In addition, the Veterans Agency War Pensioners’ Welfare Service gives extensive advice and support to all War Pensioners and War Widow(er)s living in the UK and the Irish Republic.  They also give advice and assistance to anybody who thinks they may be able to claim a War Disablement/War Widow(er)s Pension.

The Welfare Service works in close partnership with ex-Service organisations, War Pensions Committees and other voluntary groups or statutory bodies such as social services departments in delivering welfare support.  They can provide a wide range of advice on:

LIFE AT THE ROYAL HOSPITAL CHELSEA

“WHAT ME? A CHELSEA PENSIONER? GET AWAY!”

I have lost count of the number of times I hear this when talking to old soldiers. “I’d never qualify”, they say. “Didn’t you have to be in the war? A Sergeant’s Mess member? Have lots of medals?”

The answer is emphatically “No!”. The Royal Hospital Chelsea was founded by Charles II towards the end of the 17th century as a refuge for old soldiers and that is precisely what it is today – an oasis of calm in a busy world, a residential care home for 300 Pensioners, who go about their daily lives exactly as they would if in any other old-peoples home, but with a small military accent. Of course, this alone may be enough to put some men off. “I’ve done more Church Parades then you’ve had hot dinners, sonny, and I ain’t about to start that again!”

Well you can’t please everyone, but very few people realize that it is remarkably easy to apply for a berth at the Royal Hospital, that each applicant is given a chance to see it for himself before deciding, and that once in residence there is a huge amount on offer. Whether your interests lie in socialising, sports (nothing to strenuous!), military history, travel, music, handicrafts or gardening. The Royal Hospital Chelsea has all this on offer and more besides, and all in congenial surroundings where the accent is on informality and friendship and where experiences and freedom from worry add to the quality of life. And we are always looking for Pensioners who can bring their skills to bear in the day – to – day administration of the Royal Hospital.

Facilities (all free of charge) include full bed and board, uniform, laundry, cleaning and full-time in-house medical and nursing care. Visits from families, friends and regimental associations are encouraged and Pensioners are free to come and go as they please whether to the shops, the bookie’s (very popular) or further a field on outings and cruises.

“Too good to be true”, I hear you say. “There must be a catch”. Well no, not really. To qualify as a Chelsea Pensioner all you have to be is:

·        Aged 65 or over (though exceptions may be made)

·        Free from the obligation to support a family – i.e. single

·        In receipt of an Army Pension or an Army Disability Pension. You

Surrender this on entry to the Royal Hospital, but you keep any

State and Occupational Pensions you are entitled to.

“Not such a bad deal after all”, I hear you murmur. No indeed! Interested? Then ring the Head of Administration 0207 881 5204 or visit our website www.chelsea-pensioners.org.uk for further information

Would you please return the attached Annex B on page 21 to reach Home Headquarters by Monday 26th April 2010 so that catering arrangements can be made in good time.
